Area Libraries Receive LDS Genealogy Gifts

Thanks to the Guntersville Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, residents of Marshall County will be able to review compact discs at local libraries to find local cemetery information for family genealogy searches.

Volunteers from the church began the project in 1992. Members of the church visited each cemetery in Marshall County and recorded the information from all of the tombstones by hand. According to Dayid Jex, a member of the church and one of the volunteers, they had to overcome several problems during the surveys. One of those problems was the fact some cemeteries used different names, changed names, or were listed on the map, but could not be located. Jex also credited the dedicated efforts of Dorothy Clara Chambers Williams, wife of John Raymond Williams. Although she has since died, he said her devotion and determination gave "heart" to the project.

As a result, the names were transcribed from hand and put onto a digital format. Members recorded more than 47,700 people buried in 150 Marshall County cemeteries. "We are so happy to have this," said Lisa Rowell, of the Albertville Library. Lynn Burgess, director of the Boaz Library echoed those sentiments, stating that it was a huge project that really needed to be done.

The most current information was 40 years out of date and, because of vandalism, deterioration, and neglect of the tombstones cemeteries, the information threatened to be erased forever. The digital discs were placed in any locations within the county at include Sardis Public Library, Snead State College, the Marshall County Records Department, the AIbertville and Boaz Public Libraries, and the Family History Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In the future, it will be available online through the Utah Genealogical Society.

The Family History Center is located at 4961 Spring Creek Drive Guntersville and is open to the public for use from 10am-lPM Thursdays. Appointments may also be made contacting the director, Jim Kilkpatrick at 593-1921. The church also sponsors a free family history research Website. (credit - Sand Mountain Reporter Staff Writers)
